PIGGABLE SYSTEM COMPONENTS

PigMove

Piggable transfer systems can be employed whenever it is desirable to ensure that a pipeline is empty between operations. Applications include bulk loading and unloading operations, transfer of non-compatible products in a common line, positive delivery of blending components to a mixing vessel, elimination of viscous product "setup", elimination of product cross-contamination, elimination of flushing requirements between transfers, and any number of others. Line sizes can range from 1 inch to 24 inches in diameter or larger.

The use of piggable lines can drastically reduce the number pipelines needed to transfer various liquids from one point in a process to the another. However, the piping system must be intentionally designed to accommodate pigs and typically requires a number of special "piggable" components. The following is a list of piggable components available from Globetech Services, Inc.

Portable Unloading Pig (PUP) Launcher - The PUP is a special Pig Launcher mounted on wheels. It is designed to eliminate product loses during tankcar unloading operations, and reduce the physical effort needed to handle bulky transfer hoses.

Piggable Tees - Special tee fitting manufactured with a built-in "pig-guide" to prevent a pig from moving into the branch of the tee. Piggable tees are available in Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, Fiberglass, and other materials.

Demisters - Designed to help coalesce mist and collect the resulting liquid for disposal. Demisters are available in Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, Fiberglass, and other materials.

Volume/Pressure Regulators- For regulation of pressure and pig velocity in transfer lines.

Pressure Gauges - Indication of line pressure or pigging-air supply pressure.

Pig Passage Indicator (Magnetic) - These devices are used to detect the presence of a pig at a particular point in piggable piping system. Their magnetic sensors allow them to be non-intrusive, but the pig must be equipped with an embedded magnet. They permit local indication of the pig's presence, or can serve as a remote sensor for a computer-operated/monitored system.

Pig Passage Indicator (Mechanical) - These devices are used to detect the presence of a pig at a particular point in piggable piping system. They are of a mechanical, intrusive, design. They operate using a stainless steel probe, which is physically lifted by the pig when it passes, to trip the local indicator. If they are to be used as part of a computer-operated/monitored system, the local indicator can be fitted with an optional micro switch.

Pig Detector (Plunger Type) - This device is intrusive and hand operated. The operator physically pushes a spring-return probe into the line to "feel" the presence of the pig. They are very effective and relatively inexpensive.

Pig Stop - A stainless steel rod that penetrates the pipe wall and protrudes into the center of the pipe. It physically blocks the movement of the pig and can be retracted with an electric solenoid to allow the pig to pass. We also supply non-retractable pig stops which can be used to stop the pig while allowing fluid to pass freely, these are typically built in a "wafer" configuration and installed in-line between flanges.

Piggable Ball Valves - Manual or remotely operated, these ball valves are full-ported (line I.D. size) and permit free passage of the pig.

Pig Switches - Sealing or non-sealing, these switches will accommodate pigs traveling through a long radius weld ell (3R). Steel bodied pigs are not recommended, however, because of possible damage as a result of run away pigs. Both types of switches can be automated for remote operation and all switches are customized to the application. This includes in-and-out configurations such as forks, T's, Y's, and various others.
  • The Non-sealing Pig Switch will divert a pig into the pipeline requiring pigging without restricting the flow into the pipeline not requiring pigging. This process is used on multiple pipelines sharing one set of pig traps and on pipeline loops.
  • The Sealing Pig Switch is used when the flow is limited to the line being pigged. This requires the dead line to be sealed from the flow. The Sealing Switch will not switch from one side to the other without a zero pressure drop from the live line to the dead line. This process is adaptable in barge unloading applications and tank farms where the lines are purged of product using air or nitrogen each time a tank is filled or emptied. Bi-directional pigs are required for this process.

3-Way Inline Piggable Branch Valve (IBV) - Our IBV is used at branch points in distribution piping. It functions as a piggable T-port ball valve with an integral pig stop.

3-Way Piggable Diverter Ball Valves - These are 3-way valves that are specifically design with long-radius internal bends. They are used to route the movement of a pig from one pipeline, into one of two alternate pipelines.

Piggable Bends - Piggable bends are 30, 45 or 90-degree bends, designed to be piggable. We supply piggable bends with an ovality specification of +/- 2% of the diameter. This tight specification helps ensure that the pig does not lose contact with the pipe wall as it moves through the bend. As a result, propellant "blow-by" is minimized and cleaning efficiency is enhanced. Bends are supplied in carbon steel or stainless steel with curve radii of 3D, 4D and 5D, depending on the wall thickness and the inside diameter of the pipe or tubing to be used.

Piggable Hoses and Couplings - Piggable hoses and couplings have the same I.D. as the pipelines to which they are attached. A pig can travel from one pipe, through the hose and into the other without getting stuck, they allow free passage of a pig.

Startup Pigs - Scraper, abrasive and foam pigs are available for line cleaning and polishing prior to startup.

Dust Bags - Used for catching line debris during the startup cleaning process

Pipe Fittings- Miscellaneous flanges, gaskets, air supply fittings, etc. are available, as needed, for piggable and for non-piggable piping systems.

Piggable Transfer Manifolds - Sized and specified by Globetech Services. These manifolds are manufactured to meet specific process applications. They are used to eliminate the need for hose exchanges and the product loss/contamination and operator safety hazards associated with them.
